Marais Viljoen

   

Marais Viljoen (b. 2 December 1915) was State President of South Africa on August 21, 1978 to October 10, 1978, when he was succeeded by B.J. Vorster, and again on June 4, 1979 until September 3, 1984 and was then succeeded by PW (Botha.
He was a relatively moderate member of the National Party, that instituted the apartheid regime.
He was married on 20 April 1940 to Dorothea Maria (Marietjie) Brink (17 September 19176 October 2005). He was the youngest child of six children. He had one daughter from his marriage, and she in turn had one son. He worked in the Post Office, and there after at a newspaper, Die Transvaler, before becoming permanently involved with politics.
He was the last non-executive State President of South Africa. The 1983 South African Constitution changed the status of the President to one exercising executive power.
